The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says it is working around the clock to process outstanding payments to scholar transport operators following widespread service withdrawals across the province.
The disruptions, sparked by delayed payments, have significantly affected teaching and learning, particularly in the Buffalo City, OR Tambo District Municipality and Chris Hani District Municipality.
Following a meeting with operators, the department said the delays were caused by technical and system-related challenges.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that all legitimate scholar transport operator claims are processed and paid,” the department said.
It added: “The delays are due to technical and system-related challenges affecting payment processes, and we have deployed officials across all districts to address the backlog.”
The department acknowledged the impact of the protest on schools, saying: “The withdrawal of services has had a significant impact on teaching and learning, and our priority is to stabilise the system and ensure operators return to the roads to transport learners.”
Authorities have committed to continued engagement with stakeholders as efforts to resolve the situation are intensified.
