Eastern Cape health condemns illegal strike at Gqeberha facilities

The Eastern Cape Department of Health has condemned an ongoing unprotected strike at Dora Nginza Hospital and Motherwell Community Health Centre, warning it is disrupting critical services and putting patients at risk.

The department said while staff concerns are acknowledged, proper legal processes were not followed. It remains open to engagement but not during unlawful action.

Following security incidents at Motherwell CHC, measures such as increased security, CCTV installation and facility upgrades have been implemented. Patients have been redirected to other facilities to ensure continued care.

Authorities have issued strike ultimatums, enforced a “no work, no pay” rule, and are pursuing legal action, including an interdict. The Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa has urged members to return to work.

The department warned that continued participation in the illegal strike could lead to disciplinary action, including dismissal.
