Banyana Banyana begin Algeria test ahead of WAFCON 2026

Banyana Banyana kick off their international friendly against Algeria Women’s National Team at Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday, as part of their preparations for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Head coach Desiree Ellis emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum and testing her squad against varied opposition as preparations intensify for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament, recently rescheduled by Confederation of African Football, will now take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026.

“With the delay, it’s crucial that we keep the players active and challenged,” said Ellis. “Algeria offers a different test. They are physical, but also dangerous on the counterattack. We need to expose ourselves to as many playing styles as possible so we can adapt during WAFCON.”

South Africa are drawn in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Tanzania, with further preparation matches, including one against Japan Women’s National Team in June, lined up.
