Thirty suspects have been arrested during a joint police and military operation targeting illegal mining activities in Mohlakeng, on the West Rand.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, working alongside the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), conducted Operation Prosper on Monday, 7 September 2026.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 43, include nationals from Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Mozambique, as well as South African citizens.
They face various charges, including illegal mining, possession of equipment used for illegal mining and contraventions of the Immigration Act.
Police also seized a large quantity of equipment allegedly linked to illegal mining operations. The items recovered include 44 generators, pendukas, jackhammers,
