A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mtubatuba Regional Court for raping a six-year-old girl in eBaswazini, northern KwaZulu-Natal, in March 2025.
The man, who was known to the child as a neighbour, allegedly forced her into his home while she was walking from school and raped her before threatening her not to tell anyone.
The child immediately reported the incident to her mother, who contacted police. The accused was later arrested after being positively identified by the victim.
The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his details to be placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders and National Child Protection Register.
The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying children must be protected from abuse and exploitation.
