Strong winds damage more than 20 North West schools

More than 20 schools across the North West have been damaged by strong winds that ripped off roofs and destroyed mobile classrooms between 4 and 5 September.

The damage has added pressure to the provincial Department of Education, which is already dealing with the loss of three schools in recent fires.

Schools in the Ngaka Modiri Molema, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Bojanala and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts have been affected.

MEC for Education Dr Desbo Mohono said the department’s priority is to assess the damage, ensure the safety of learners and educators, and minimise disruptions to teaching and learning.

Infrastructure teams will be deployed to affected schools to assess the damage and put alternative measures in place to ensure learning continues.

“We are deeply concerned and saddened by the damage caused by these destructive winds,” Mohono said.
