A 38-year-old man, Jan “Loekie” Human, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Tasha Smith, 34, in Upington.
Human was convicted by the Upington Regional Court after stabbing Smith during an argument at their shared room on 21 December 2025.
The court heard that the couple had been drinking together at around 6am when an argument broke out. Human stabbed Smith with a knife, and she died at the scene.
Human was arrested following the incident and remained in custody throughout the trial.
The 20-year sentence was wholly suspended for five years.
ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner Major General Monica Sebili commended Detective Constable Chandre Mouton of Augrabies SAPS for the investigation, saying the sentence would help restore public confidence in the justice system.
