Bafana Bafana players and support staff will have to wait a little longer for their 2026 FIFA World Cup bonuses, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) blaming complex tax requirements in the United States and Mexico for the delay.
SAFA says the bonuses cannot be processed until it completes its tax obligations in both countries, where Bafana played matches during the tournament.
The association has brought in specialist legal and tax advisers to deal with the requirements and says progress has already been made.
SAFA has also secured an Employer Identification Number from the US Internal Revenue Service, while specialists are finalising the necessary tax calculations and documentation. Mexican tax obligations are also being concluded.
The association confirmed that a portion of the World Cup prize money has already been received and that all allowances, fees and other amounts owed to players and support staff have been paid.
Only the World Cup bonuses remain outstanding, with SAFA saying these will be released once the relevant tax processes have been completed.
SAFA says it is working to finalise the matter as quickly as possible and has assured players and support staff that all legitimate bonuses will be paid.
The association has also urged media organisations to allow sufficient time to respond to inquiries, particularly on complex financial matters, saying rushed deadlines can result in incomplete or misleading reports.
