Five arrested over alleged theft at Livingstone Hospital

Five people, including four Livingstone Hospital employees and a community member, have been arrested in connection with alleged theft at the Gqeberha hospital.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health says the arrests followed swift interventions by TYEKS Security Services over the past two weeks.

The suspects were allegedly involved in theft from various sections of the hospital, including the kitchen and laundry departments. Air-conditioning equipment and medicines were also reportedly among the items targeted.

TYEKS Security handed the suspects over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), which effected the arrests and is leading the criminal investigation.

The Department of Health welcomed the intervention and warned that there is no place for theft, corruption or misconduct within the public healthcare system.

It said employees found to have participated in unlawful activities will face appropriate disciplinary action, with labour relations processes already underway.

The department has also urged employees and members of the public to report suspicious activities that could threaten public resources or disrupt healthcare services.
