Broos proud of Bafana as world cup hopes remain alive

Bafana Bafana’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain alive after a spirited 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second Group A match.

After opening their campaign with a defeat to Mexico, South Africa knew they needed a positive result to stay in contention for qualification. The team responded with a determined display against a physically imposing Czech side, earning a crucial point and keeping their World Cup dream intact.

Head coach Hugo Broos praised his players for their resilience and fighting spirit after the match, expressing pride in the way they responded after conceding an early goal.

“We played against a very strong team with tall players and good physical presence, but I am proud of my team and the way they performed,” said Broos.

The Belgian mentor was particularly pleased with his side’s response in the second half, where they managed to level matters from the penalty spot after continuing to put pressure on their opponents.

Broos believes the performance demonstrated the character within the squad and showed that Bafana Bafana can compete against quality opposition on the world’s biggest stage.

The coach, however, warned that the team’s toughest challenge may still lie ahead. South Africa’s final group-stage match against South Korea will be a must-win encounter if they are to stand a realistic chance of advancing to the next round.

Broos described the upcoming clash as a difficult test but stressed the importance of maintaining the same mentality, discipline and intensity that his players displayed against Czechia.

“We have to keep the same mindset and produce the same type of performance. The game against South Korea will be very difficult, but we have shown that we can compete,” he said.
