The Department of Home Affairs has announced extended operating hours at offices nationwide this weekend to support the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s Voter Registration Weekend.
All Home Affairs offices across the country will be open on Saturday and Sunday, giving citizens an opportunity to apply for Smart ID Cards or collect cards that are ready for collection.
Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, said the initiative aims to make it easier for South Africans to obtain the identification documents required to register and participate in upcoming elections.
Schreiber emphasized that the weekend presents an important opportunity for citizens to prepare to exercise their democratic rights, adding that more than 370,000 Smart ID Cards are currently awaiting collection at Home Affairs offices nationwide.
The minister urged those who have been notified that their Smart ID Cards are ready to collect them without delay, noting that an ID document is not only essential for voting but also for accessing services, opportunities and economic participation.
The extended operating hours form part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve access to services and ensure that all eligible South Africans have the necessary documentation to take part in the country’s democratic processes.
