Ramaphosa meets faith leaders over migration concerns

President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with religious and interfaith leaders at the Union Buildings to discuss migration management and the National Dialogue amid rising public concern over illegal immigration.

Ramaphosa said the country’s challenges are rooted in deeper socio-economic issues. “To tackle the challenges our country faces, we need faster and more inclusive growth… Migration is not the cause of our problems, but it is something that we must manage constructively and collectively,” he said.

He urged faith leaders to promote unity and prevent division, saying: “We must demonstrate that there is a better way to manage these genuine concerns.”

The President also highlighted the National Dialogue as a tool for unity, noting: “At every defining moment in our history, we have found our way forward through dialogue with one another.”

Government says its migration response is based on five pillars, including border security and law enforcement, while deportation processes for certain foreign nationals are underway through priority courts.
