South Africa has deported 980 Malawian nationals from the Lindela Repatriation Centre as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal immigration.
Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi said the South African and Malawian governments are working together to facilitate the return of Malawian citizens, with more repatriations expected in the coming days.
The Malawian government has provided eight buses to transport its citizens home, while South Africa has added 10 more buses to speed up the process.
Kubayi also announced plans to re-establish a court at Lindela to fast-track deportation cases. Government is further working on dedicated immigration courts to strengthen enforcement efforts.
Meanwhile, more than 40,000 undocumented foreign nationals have been arrested in South Africa since the start of 2026, including over 7,400 arrests in the past month alone.
Government said it is also working with Ghana and Nigeria to facilitate the return of their citizens who are in the country illegally.
