A Home Affairs official is among two suspects arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime Investigation (SCCI) unit in Limpopo over the alleged fraudulent processing of late birth registration certificates.
The arrests stem from an investigation into an incident at the Malamulele Department of Home Affairs on 10 July 2019, where a Home Affairs official allegedly issued birth certificates for two children without following the required legal procedures.
According to the Hawks, one suspect allegedly used his cousin’s identity document to register his children after their foreign national mother died. The alleged fraud was uncovered when a school official noticed that the cousin was incorrectly listed as the children’s mother.
The two suspects, aged 37 and 40, are expected to appear in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on 27 July 2026 on charges of fraud and corruption. A third suspect is still being sought.
