Death toll rises to five after N2 crash near Peddie

The death toll in a tragic collision involving a bakkie and a long-distance bus on the N2 near Peddie has risen to five, according to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport.

The crash occurred at approximately 07:30 on Thursday morning. Four occupants of the bakkie were declared dead at the scene, while a fifth victim later died from injuries while receiving treatment.

All five deceased were travelling in the bakkie and include three men and two women. A sixth occupant sustained critical injuries and was transported to hospital for further medical treatment.

The bus, which was travelling from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town, was carrying passengers at the time of the collision. The driver was treated for shock, while several passengers received medical attention for minor injuries and trauma.

Emergency services, law enforcement and traffic officials responded swiftly to the scene and later cleared the roadway, allowing traffic flow to return to normal.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police have opened a culpable homicide case at Peddie SAPS.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.
