11 dead, including five children, in Free State bus crash

At least 11 people, including five children, have died after a bus carrying about 60 passengers overturned on the N1 north of Trompsburg in the Free State on Thursday night.

The crash occurred shortly after 9.30pm, about 24km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg.

According to Free State Emergency Medical Services, the bus came to rest across the N1, blocking the roadway, while emergency teams rushed to the scene.

Initial reports indicate that 14 people were injured and found outside the bus, while a child was trapped with a hand pinned beneath the wreckage as rescue teams continued extrication efforts.

Authorities have confirmed that 11 people—six adults and five children—have died. The identities and genders of the victims have not yet been established.

Emergency medical personnel, rescue teams and law enforcement officers remain on the scene as triage and rescue operations continue. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.

Motorists travelling between Trompsburg and Edenburg have been urged to avoid the area where possible, as traffic officials divert vehicles and significant delays are expected.

Free State Emergency Medical Services extended its condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
