Former State Security Agency head Arthur Fraser has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of being involved in an alleged bribery scheme linked to the Phala Phala controversy.
Fraser claims that Ramaphosa offered him R50 million to withdraw a criminal complaint related to the incident. The allegations form part of ongoing political and legal disputes surrounding the matter, which continues to attract national attention.
The case began in June 2022 when Fraser laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa, accusing him of money laundering, corruption, kidnapping, and covering up a burglary at his Phala Phala farm in 2020.
It is alleged that around $580,000 (about R9 million) in cash was stolen from the farm, with the money linked to the sale of buffalo to a foreign businessman. Fraser further claims that Ramaphosa failed to properly report the incident and attempted to conceal it, and that state security or police resources may have been used to privately recover the stolen funds.
