SAWS warns of easing conditions in central SA as disruptive rain and storms persist in other provinces

Adverse weather conditions are expected to begin clearing from the central parts of the country this afternoon, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said on Wednesday.

In an update, the weather service said conditions will start improving across Gauteng, North West and the Free State as the system slowly weakens.

“However, rain will persist over Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as along the south coast of the Republic of South Africa today, so residents are advised to remain cautious,” SAWS said.

On Tuesday, the weather service warned that residents of the Eastern and Western Cape remain on high alert this week following the issuance of two Orange Level 8 warnings for disruptive rainfall in parts of the provinces.

“Warnings of lower levels have also been issued for other provinces. This follows the onset of a cut-off low-pressure system, the effects of which are expected to be felt for the better part of the week,” SAWS said.

The weather service has also issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain that could lead to flooding of roads and settlements over several municipalities in the Western and Eastern Cape. Affected areas include the Central Karoo, Kannaland and Hessequa in the Western Cape, as well as Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Buffalo City Metro, Dr Beyers Naudé, Blue Crane Route, Ndlambe, Ngqushwa, Great Kei, Mnquma, Mbhashe, King Sabatha Dalindyebo, Nyandeni, Port St Johns, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Mbizana Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

An additional Orange Level 6 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. These storms are expected to bring heavy downpours, possible flooding of roads and settlements, as well as large hail in some populated areas.

Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged South Africans to exercise extreme caution following the severe weather alerts issued by SAWS.

Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to stay updated with weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.
