The South African Weather Service has warned of an intense cut-off low-pressure system expected to bring cold, wet and windy conditions across large parts of South Africa from 4 to 7 May 2026.
The system is forecast to make landfall over the western regions on Tuesday, initially impacting the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, before spreading eastward into central and eastern areas by Wednesday.
A cut-off low is a slow-moving weather system that can cause prolonged severe conditions in one area.
From Monday, isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and western interior, with more widespread rainfall developing along the south-west coast.
Severe thunderstorms are likely over the interior and eastern parts of the Eastern Cape from Monday afternoon, bringing the risk of heavy downpours, localised flooding, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.
