Elderly woman allegedly killed over witchcraft accusations in Ngcobo

Police in Ngcobo are investigating a murder case following the brutal killing of a 75-year-old woman who was allegedly accused of witchcraft and killed by family members.

The incident occurred at Zadungeni A/A, Luthuthu Locality, on the morning of 17 May 2026.

According to police, the victim, identified as Ms Nokhansala Sidiki, was allegedly taken from her home by certain family members and escorted to a nearby stream, where she was accused of practising witchcraft.

It is alleged that she was assaulted with a plank before being drowned in the stream. Her body was later discovered naked next to the water with visible bruises to the head and face, as well as strangulation marks on her neck.

The suspects fled the scene and remain at large. No arrests have been made.

The case is currently under investigation by the SAPS Detective Unit, with police confirming that witness statements are being obtained and forensic evidence has been collected from the scene.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Vuyisile Ncata, condemned the killing, describing it as a “savage and deeply disturbing attack on a vulnerable elderly woman.”

“Accusing someone of witchcraft and taking the law into your own hands is not only illegal but inhuman. We will leave no stone unturned until those responsible are arrested and face the full might of the law,” said Ncata.

He also urged community leaders to help combat mob justice and encouraged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“If you know something, speak out; silence makes you complicit,” he added.
