Political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May 2026, following his arrest on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
Mogotsi was arrested in connection with an alleged staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus, where he reportedly claimed that unknown men in a white bakkie were targeting him.
Investigators allegedly believe the incident may have been orchestrated as part of a wider scheme. The firearm linked to the incident has reportedly also been connected to several serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder cases.
The arrest comes amid growing scrutiny surrounding allegations of political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Mogotsi’s lawyer, Makau William Sekgatja, has criticised the arrest, arguing that his client could have simply been summoned to court instead of being detained.
Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Sekgatja said the legal team is considering legal action against the state.
“We will be investigating, and our client is within his rights to go the civil route to actually sue for malicious prosecution as well as unlawful arrest,” he said.
The matter also follows ongoing tensions linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where Mogotsi’s legal team previously attempted to recuse an evidence leader over allegations involving manipulated WhatsApp conversations.
