Authorities have cleared the wreckage following a horrific accident in Kariega that claimed seven lives earlier today, and the road has since been reopened to traffic.
Emergency personnel worked at the scene for several hours before removing the damaged vehicles and restoring normal traffic flow. While the road is open again, investigations into the crash are still underway.
The seven victims, all taxi passengers, have been taken to a government mortuary where identification procedures will be conducted. Families are expected to receive assistance as they begin funeral arrangements.
Preliminary information suggests that most of the passengers were commuting to work at a local automotive components factory when the fatal collision occurred.
The minibus taxi driver, who also sustained serious injuries, is receiving medical treatment and is expected to face a culpable homicide charge once he has recovered sufficiently.
Authorities say the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
