Rassie Erasmus honoured with order of Ikhamanga for rugby success

Rassie Erasmus has expressed deep gratitude after being named as a recipient of South Africa’s prestigious Order of Ikhamanga, describing the honour as a “warm feeling all round”.

The award recognises Erasmus’ contribution to South African rugby, particularly his role in leading the Springboks to Rugby World Cup glory and helping unite the country through the sport. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to officially present the honour during an investiture ceremony next Tuesday.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Phindile Baleni, who serves as Chancellor of the National Orders and director-general in the Presidency.

Speaking to IOL, Erasmus reflected on his rugby journey and said the recognition belongs to everyone who played a role in his career. He said receiving the honour was a “wow” moment and stressed that achievements in rugby are never accomplished by one individual alone.

Rassie Erasmus is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in world rugby. He guided the Springboks to Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, cementing his legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest coaches.

Under his leadership, the Springboks have continued to dominate on the international stage. In 2025, South Africa successfully defended the Rugby Championship title and completed an unbeaten November tour of Europe, including impressive victories over France and Ireland. The win in Dublin marked the Springboks’ first victory over Ireland there since 2012.

The Order of Ikhamanga is among South Africa’s highest national honours and is awarded to citizens who have excelled in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport. Erasmus’ recognition highlights the impact rugby continues to have in bringing South Africans together.
