A swift joint operation between a private security company and police has led to the arrest of four suspects following a courier van hijacking on the N2 near Butterworth.
Police say the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 28 April 2026, when a grey Ford Courier van was travelling near Tholeni Location in Ndabakazi A/A. The driver was allegedly stopped at gunpoint by occupants of a white Toyota Avanza and abducted. He was later released unharmed in an open area.
A tracking company was activated and traced the hijacked vehicle to bushes in Gisi Location, Ngqamakhwe. A private security armed response unit recovered the courier van along with a grey Ford Ikon containing suspected stolen goods, although the suspects initially fled the scene.
In a surprising turn, two of the suspects later reported a false hijacking of the Ford Ikon at the Butterworth police station, leading to their immediate arrest.
The South African Police Service Tactical Response Team, assisted by Crime Intelligence, tracked down the remaining suspects in Butterworth CBD. Officers recovered a Taurus pistol with ammunition, suspected stolen property, and a signal-jamming device.
The four suspects, aged between 25 and 27, are expected to appear soon in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on charges including hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property.
