SAWS warns of very cold, wet conditions in Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of very cold and wet conditions over high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape and south-western KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

Several weather warnings have been issued, including disruptive rain and snow in parts of the Eastern Cape, while severe thunderstorms are expected in parts of the Northern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

An Orange Level 5 warning has been issued for disruptive rain over Port St Johns, Ingquza Hill, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Ntabankulu, with possible flooding of settlements, roads and bridges and disruption to essential services.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rain is also in place along coastal areas between KuGompo City and Port St Johns, including the north-eastern interior of the Eastern Cape.

Meanwhile, Yellow Level 2 snow warnings have been issued for Matatiele and Elundini, with difficult driving conditions and possible isolated losses of vulnerable livestock.

SAWS says conditions are expected to become partly cloudy and cold to cool over the weekend, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.
