The South African Social Security Agency has condemned the illegal practice of selling queue positions outside its offices, warning that it exploits vulnerable grant beneficiaries.
CEO Themba Matlou described the trend as “unacceptable” and a “serious exploitation” of the elderly and people living with disabilities.
“We take serious exception to these acts as they happen at the doorsteps of our offices and create an impression that we are complicit. We condemn this in the strongest possible terms,” said Matlou.
He warned that action will be taken against those involved, including any officials who may have enabled the practice, adding that SASSA will strengthen security and work with law enforcement.
“We are not oblivious to our own challenges… We are working tirelessly to enhance our queue management systems to ensure fair and orderly access,” he said.
SASSA also urged beneficiaries to use its online services, including the eLife Certification system, to reduce long queues at offices.
