Rising threats against prosecutors spark alarm in Eastern Cape

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has raised serious concern over increasing threats directed at prosecutors, warning that such incidents pose a direct danger to the justice system.

This follows the circulation of content on social media platform X, allegedly linked to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which included threats against a prosecutor involved in a case before the kuGompo Regional Court.

The NPA says any form of intimidation targeting its officials cannot be tolerated, stressing that prosecutors play a critical role in representing the State and must be allowed to perform their duties without fear or interference.

Authorities have urged that all threats—regardless of whether they appear credible—should be treated as serious and reported for investigation, warning that such actions undermine the rule of law and endanger lives.

The concern is particularly acute in the Eastern Cape, where three prosecutors have been killed in the past two years, highlighting the growing risks faced by those within the prosecuting authority.

The NPA has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its officials, stating that any threats against prosecutors will carry consequences and calling on the public to refrain from any form of intimidation.
