President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for urgent reforms to improve municipal governance, warning that failures at local government level are undermining service delivery and economic growth.
Speaking at the 2026 National Local Economic Development Summit, Ramaphosa highlighted issues such as weak financial management, poor revenue collection, infrastructure neglect, and wasteful expenditure.
“These challenges translate into unreliable electricity, water insecurity, poor roads, poor service delivery and unsafe trading environments,” he said.
Ramaphosa stressed that governance reform is critical, adding: “Without fixing governance, we cannot fix service delivery and without fixing service delivery, we cannot unlock local economic development.”
He also called for improved revenue collection and greater investment in infrastructure to support businesses and drive local economic growth.
