Adriaan Snyman, the former bodyguard of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, is suing the state for more than R20 million in damages following his acquittal on criminal charges linked to a 2018 incident.
The case stems from July 2018, when Malema discharged a rifle into the air during the party’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. Snyman was charged with providing a firearm or ammunition to a person not permitted to possess it.
According to Snyman’s spokesperson, Kirsten McLeod, the State ultimately dropped the charges due to a lack of evidence against him.
McLeod said they have submitted a written demand for payment exceeding R20 million to both the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), but are still awaiting a response.
“This is a result of a malicious prosecution claim. The 30-day period we gave the NPA and SAPS to respond has now expired. We will be instituting legal action shortly, and if they fail to respond, we will apply for default judgment,” she said.
