The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape is mourning the death of a police officer who died following a tragic accident in Motherwell, Gqeberha.
The accident occurred on Saturday, 19 September 2026, on Ngonyama Street in NU 8, Motherwell, while the two police officers were conducting patrols within their policing precinct.
Both members were rushed to hospital after the accident. One officer later succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident, while the second officer remains hospitalised and is receiving medical treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata conveyed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased officer.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our members in a tragic accident. The death of a colleague is a painful loss to the entire SAPS family. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family during this difficult time, and we wish the injured member strength and a speedy recovery,” said Lt Gen Ncata.
