A 32-year-old police constable accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in Gqeberha is expected back in court on Tuesday for a formal bail application.
The officer was arrested on 19 September 2026 following an investigation into the allegations and appeared before the Gqeberha Magistrates Court on Monday.
He was remanded in custody pending Tuesday’s bail proceedings.
The allegations have drawn condemnation from Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha, who called for the matter to be investigated thoroughly.
Nqatha said allegations of criminal conduct involving police officers are particularly concerning because SAPS members are entrusted with protecting the public and vulnerable groups.
He also called on SAPS management to take appropriate action against the constable while the investigation continues.
The MEC urged parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and take steps to protect children from abuse.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations have not been tested in court. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
