Orlando Pirates have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Belgian Pro League side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of highly rated winger Relebohile Mofokeng, bringing the young star one step closer to fulfilling his European dream.
The Buccaneers announced on Wednesday that negotiations between the two clubs have been successfully concluded, with both sides agreeing on the transfer fee and structure of the deal. However, the move will only be finalised once Mofokeng passes a medical examination and agrees to personal terms with the Belgian outfit.
In a significant revelation, Pirates disclosed that the deal had actually been agreed in principle before the FIFA World Cup, but both clubs deliberately kept it under wraps.
According to the club, the decision was made to allow Mofokeng to focus entirely on representing Bafana Bafana during their historic FIFA World Cup campaign, without the distraction of ongoing transfer speculation.
“Both parties made the joint decision to hold off on any public announcement until after the tournament, wanting Mofokeng to focus fully on the World Cup with Bafana Bafana without the distraction of transfer talk,” the club said.
The move marks a major milestone in the career of one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, whose performances for Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana have attracted growing interest from Europe.
Orlando Pirates confirmed that no further comment will be made until the transfer process, including the medical and personal terms, has been fully completed. If finalised, Mofokeng will become the latest South African star to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues.
