Motorists in parts of the Eastern Cape are being urged to avoid two major roads following protest action that has brought traffic to a standstill.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed the closure of the R61 between Bizana and Mzamba at Seaview, next to the BP Garage.
The closure is linked to a community protest reportedly sparked by electricity supply challenges affecting parts of the Seaview locality.
Traffic is currently at a standstill, with no estimated time for the road to reopen.
Meanwhile, the N2 at Brooksnek in eMaxesibeni has also been closed following a protest by community members.
The protesters are reportedly demanding answers from the Mayor and Speaker regarding the election of candidates.
Motorists are advised to avoid the affected areas where possible, use alternative routes and exercise extreme caution.
The Department of Transport has also urged motorists to follow the instructions of law enforcement officials as efforts continue to manage traffic in the affected areas
