Orlando Pirates sent an early warning to their Betway Premiership title rivals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday.
The Buccaneers produced a dominant second-half display to secure all three points and move to the summit of the league standings. The result lifted Pirates to seven points from their opening three matches.
The first half proved frustrating for the defending champions as Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali repeatedly stood between Pirates and the opening goal.
Pirates created several opportunities and controlled much of the play, but could not find a way past the Nigerian international as the sides went into the break level at 0-0.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute when Ghampani Lungu produced a moment of individual brilliance to put Pirates ahead.
The Buccaneers quickly built on their advantage, with Lebone Seema doubling the lead three minutes later. The defender rose highest to meet Deon Hotto’s corner and headed the ball beyond Nwabali.
Daniel Msendami then completed the scoring in the 87th minute after capitalising on an error at the back to seal a convincing victory.
The win marks a strong response from Pirates after they were held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu in their previous league encounter.
