South African motorists will pay less for petrol and diesel from Wednesday, 1 July 2026, after the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) announced substantial fuel price cuts.
The decreases come despite the reintroduction of the remaining 50% of the General Fuel Levy, which added R1.50 per litre to petrol and R1.96 per litre to diesel. The impact of the levy was offset by a sharp decline in international oil prices and a stable rand.
According to the DMPR, lower global fuel prices, driven by falling Brent crude oil prices and improved stability in the Strait of Hormuz, significantly reduced the Basic Fuel Price. A reduction in the slate levy also contributed to the lower pump prices.
The new fuel prices take effect from midnight on Wednesday, 1 July, providing welcome relief for motorists, businesses and the transport sector while helping to ease inflationary pressures.
