Eastern Cape police commissioner issues marching orders ahead of Local Government Elections

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata has issued marching orders to police officers and Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Ncata addressed scores of SAPS members and IEC officials at the Mthatha Central Police Station on Wednesday, 4 November, where he emphasised the importance of impartiality, professionalism and community safety during the electoral process.

He instructed deployed officers to perform their duties with discipline, act decisively against unlawful conduct and ensure that voters across the province can exercise their constitutional right in a safe and secure environment.

The Provincial Commissioner stressed that police are not participants in the elections but are responsible for ensuring that democracy takes place under safe conditions.

He also warned that no political affiliation places anyone above the law.

As part of the province’s Election Day operational plan, Ncata is expected to conduct aerial surveillance across the OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi districts.

SAPS said police remain fully deployed and operationally ready to protect the integrity of the ballot and maintain peace across the Eastern Cape.
