Matatiele hit by snow- Eastern Cape transport warns of dangerous roads

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has issued a travel advisory after snowfall in Matatiele and persistent rain in other parts of the province created hazardous driving conditions on key provincial routes.

Motorists have been warned to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution, particularly on sections of the R56 where winter weather is affecting road safety.

Active snowfall has been reported between Matatiele and Mount Fletcher, while continuous drizzle has left the road between Ugie and Elliot wet and slippery, increasing the risk of crashes.

The department has urged drivers using these routes to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, keep headlights switched on, and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering, which could lead to vehicles skidding on icy or wet surfaces.

Road maintenance crews and traffic law enforcement officers have been deployed to monitor conditions and respond to any weather-related incidents.

The department said it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as conditions change, while appealing to motorists to prioritise safety and postpone non-essential trips if the weather deteriorates further.
