Residents of Ward 6 in Matatiele are in pursuit of a Lesotho male national who is alleged to have kidnapped a female resident from the area.
According to reports from the victim’s sister, the incident occurred on Thursday night. It is alleged that Nteboheng Nthoba was walking home from a neighbour’s house when she was attacked. The suspect, identified as Mzokoli Rasmeni, reportedly dragged her away while choking and violently assaulting her.
Neighbours who heard her screams rushed outside and found the man attacking her. They attempted to rescue her, but he overpowered them. Community members then followed the direction in which he had taken her, but only found a blanket on the road. The victim was nowhere to be found.
Reports further indicate that she later managed to contact some family members, stating that she was locked inside a room. Those who had initially tried to rescue her went to the suspect’s shack, but found no one there. They then took his Lesotho ID and handed it over to the police.
Her phone has since been switched off, and her current safety remains unknown.
Police have confirmed that a kidnapping case has been opened but have declined to disclose further details.
“Your enquiry is noted. However, the South African Police Service is unable to disclose information on this matter at this time, as the case is sensitive and the integrity of the investigation must be protected,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.
