Majodina launches anti-corruption forum to fight “Water Mafias”

Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina has announced a National Water Sector Anti-Corruption Forum to tackle crime, corruption and sabotage in South Africa’s water infrastructure.

The initiative, launched with the Special Investigating Unit, will bring together government, law enforcement and private sector partners to target so-called “water mafias” linked to infrastructure damage and corruption.

Majodina also said more than 2,600 rural settlements have been identified as lacking reliable water access, with new borehole, spring protection and water supply projects already underway.

She added that infrastructure upgrades in metros and efforts to strengthen technical skills in the department are ongoing as part of broader water sector reforms.
