Two Chinese nationals have been arrested after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers recovered stolen copper sheets worth an estimated R16 million during an intelligence-driven operation in Booysens.
The 43-year-old suspects were arrested on Thursday by the JMPD Tactical Response Unit on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, preliminary investigations revealed that the copper sheets had been reported stolen in Durban.
“The information led the officers to the location of the truck transporting the stolen copper at a warehouse situated at the corner of Treu and Vlak streets in Booysens,” said Fihla.
Police searched the warehouse and recovered the suspected stolen copper sheets inside two trucks parked in the yard.
The two suspects are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.
