The Buffalo City District Commissioner, Major General CJ Wright, has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 40-year-old Khanyisa Magqaza, who was jailed for 13 years for the murder of his 30-year-old girlfriend, Bulelwa Rigala.
Rigala’s body was discovered inside a shack in Cambridge on 22 August 2023 after police responded to a murder complaint. She had sustained multiple injuries and one of her eyes had been gouged out.
The case was investigated by Detective Constable Anathi Zaza of SAPS Cambridge, whose investigation led to Magqaza’s arrest on 25 August 2023. He appeared in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court, where his bail was successfully opposed, and remained in custody throughout the trial.
On 7 July 2026, the KuGompo Regional Court convicted Magqaza of murder and sentenced him to 13 years’ direct imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Major General Wright praised Detective Constable Zaza for his thorough investigation and determination in ensuring justice was served for the victim.
