A 30-year-old Soweto man accused of running an international sextortion and money laundering syndicate will remain behind bars after abandoning his bail application in the Protea Glen Magistrate’s Court.
Ifeel Simango faces charges of extortion and money laundering following his arrest by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Orlando West on 15 July.
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Simango was arrested after a lengthy investigation into an alleged international online sextortion and money laundering network.
The investigation began following the death of a teenage boy from Switzerland, who was allegedly lured into sending explicit images via WhatsApp to someone using a fake online identity. Investigators allege the suspect demanded large sums of money, threatening to share the images on social media if the victim refused to pay.
The victim allegedly transferred more than R232,000 into a PayPal account linked to Simango. Despite the payments and the teenager’s repeated expressions of suicidal thoughts, the explicit images were allegedly posted on Instagram. The teenager later died by suicide, leaving behind a note describing the alleged extortion.
Authorities allege the funds were later transferred from the PayPal account into several local bank accounts as part of a money laundering scheme.
A forensic digital investigation has since uncovered the alleged global reach of the operation, with investigators identifying 52 additional victims worldwide, including two South Africans believed to have been targeted by the same syndicate.
During his latest court appearance, Simango abandoned his bail application. The case has been postponed to 6 September for further investigation, and he remains in custody.
