Eastern Cape ANC Provincial Secretary Lulama Ngcukayithobi has officially launched his bid to become the organisation’s next provincial chairperson ahead of the upcoming provincial conference expected in March 2026.
Ngcukayithobi confirmed his intention to contest the top position in an interview with Sunday World, setting up a direct contest with the current provincial chairperson, Oscar Mabuyane, who has reportedly received nominations from more than four ANC regions to serve a third term.
According to Sunday World, Ngcukayithobi’s campaign is centred on promoting organisational unity and intensifying the fight against corruption among ANC deployees in government. The conference will elect new leadership across all positions, including provincial chairperson and secretary.
Ngcukayithobi said his decision to run was driven by calls from ANC branches across the province. He stated that he felt compelled to honour the wishes of members who believe he should lead the organisation.
“Based on the support I have received from branches, I took a decision to avail myself for the position of chairperson, drawing on my experience and knowledge to steer the ANC to greater heights,” he said.
He highlighted that his two terms as provincial secretary had equipped him with valuable leadership experience and a deep understanding of the organisation. Positioning himself as a unifying figure, Ngcukayithobi said the ANC was in need of renewal.
“Our organisation is bruised, and we must work hard to rebuild the trust of the people we represent, both provincially and nationally,” he said.
A key pillar of his campaign is tackling corruption within the party and government. Ngcukayithobi strongly criticised corrupt deployees, saying their actions were damaging the ANC’s image in the Eastern Cape.
“There are many challenges facing the ANC in the province, including the need to decisively root out corruption among some deployees who are giving the organisation a bad name,” he said.
Ngcukayithobi concluded by expressing his commitment to working with ANC structures across the province should he be elected. “I am contesting for the position of chairperson so that I can work with a formidable team to take the ANC in the Eastern Cape forward,” he said.
