Police are working with the Department of Home Affairs to establish the identity and nationality of a suspect linked to the first woman’s murder in Kempton Park.
The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.
Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said preliminary information suggested the suspect may not be South African, but this has not been confirmed.
“We cannot say yes, it’s a non-South African, but we have been informed that it’s a non-South African,” Mosikili said.
Authorities are checking police and prison fingerprint records while the State Security Agency has also been approached to assist with information about the suspect and any possible links to other cases.
The investigation comes as the discovery of a ninth woman’s body in Dawn Park has intensified scrutiny of a series of deaths across Ekurhuleni. Police have not confirmed any link between the cases.
