Hundreds of foreign nationals have been left stranded outside the now-closed Epping repatriation centre after the Western Cape Government ended its humanitarian repatriation operation.
Provincial authorities say everyone who had already been processed has been successfully returned to their home countries. However, many others remain at the site waiting for assistance, with humanitarian organisations stepping in to provide food and other essential support.
The Western Cape Government has confirmed that municipalities will no longer provide transport for voluntary repatriation and has advised undocumented foreign nationals to seek assistance through their embassies, consulates and the Department of Home Affairs.
Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has urged authorities to ensure that all migration measures comply with the Constitution and international human rights obligations. The commission also criticised some embassies for failing to adequately assist their citizens during the repatriation process.
