Sundowns make PSL history with 31-match unbeaten home run

Mamelodi Sundowns are proving once again that beating them on home soil is no easy task after the reigning champions extended their unbeaten run to a record 31 Premier Soccer League matches.

The Brazilians’ latest statement came in a 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants at the weekend, a result that not only maintained their perfect home run but also kept them within touching distance of the top of the table.

Sundowns have not tasted defeat at home in the league since Jaedin Rhodes struck for Stellenbosch FC on the final day of the 2023/24 season on 25 May 2024.

Since then, Loftus Versfeld and Lucas Moripe Stadium have become fortresses, with opponents repeatedly struggling to take points away from the Tshwane giants.

Against Gallants, Sundowns once again showed their quality, with Malibongwe Khoza breaking the deadlock before Cassius Mailula added a second goal after the hour mark.

Mailula’s strike was his third in four league appearances since returning to the club, giving coach Miguel Cardoso another attacking option as Sundowns juggle their domestic commitments.

The result lifted Sundowns to third on the PSL standings, level on points with Kaizer Chiefs in second, while Orlando Pirates remained top. The three Gauteng giants are separated only by goal difference.

Despite dominating proceedings, Sundowns were forced into an early change when Khuliso Mudau picked up an injury before halftime, with Zuko Mdunyelwa coming on as his replacement.

The Brazilians will now turn their attention to the MTN8 semi-finals, where they face Golden Arrows in the first leg this weekend.
