A voluntary repatriation trip from Limpopo ended in tragedy after a Malawian national collapsed and died on a bus transporting undocumented foreign nationals to Zimbabwe and Malawi.
According to Limpopo Home Affairs head Albert Matsaung, the passenger fell ill about 15 kilometres after the bus departed from the Musina Temporary Repatriation Centre.
Witnesses told officials that the man complained of feeling extremely hot before removing his shirt and collapsing.
The driver immediately turned the bus around and rushed back to the repatriation centre, where emergency medical services and police were waiting. Despite efforts to assist him, the man was declared dead on arrival.
Home Affairs said the cause of death remains unknown and will be determined through a medical investigation. The repatriation programme continues as authorities await the outcome of the investigation.
