The Department of Home Affairs has announced the recruitment of 301 additional immigration officers in a move aimed at significantly strengthening South Africa’s immigration enforcement capacity.
The department said the appointments were made possible through budget reprioritisation despite ongoing resource constraints.
“The increase from 868 to 1 169 officers will enhance enforcement capacity by 35%,” the department said.
The recruitment forms part of broader efforts, in partnership with National Treasury, to strengthen immigration enforcement and accelerate digital transformation.
Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber said the appointments are part of reforms to modernise the country’s immigration system.
“The Home Affairs @ home reforms are about building an immigration system that works from beginning to end… By appointing 301 additional immigration officers, we are now making one of the biggest investments in immigration enforcement capacity in years.”
Schreiber said the additional officers, together with new technology such as the Electronic Travel Authorisation system, will strengthen South Africa’s ability to enforce its immigration laws and protect the national interest.
