Roberto Martinez steps down as Portugal coach after world cup exit

Roberto Martinez has resigned as Portugal’s head coach following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, ending Martinez’s three-and-a-half-year spell in charge of the national team.

Martinez, who took over as Portugal coach in 2023, said he believed it was the right time to step aside after falling short of the country’s ultimate goal.

“Without winning the World Cup, there is no point in continuing,” Martinez said.

He thanked the Portuguese people for their support during his tenure and said it had been an honour to lead the national team.

“I was warmly welcomed in Portugal, and it has been a privilege to coach this team,” he said.

Martinez’s contract expired after the World Cup, and the Portuguese Football Federation is expected to begin the search for a new head coach.

Despite leading a star-studded squad that included veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Martinez was unable to deliver World Cup glory, bringing his time with Portugal to an end.
