Grieving mother seeks justice as Jafta Commission probes deadly shooting at Walter Sisulu University

Matatiele-born Sisonke Mbolekwa, 24, a bachelor of education student was shot and killed by resident manager, Manelisi Mampane inside the school with a gun using live ammunition, despite WSU being a “gun free zone.”
Sindiswa Mbolekwa, during an interview on the side-lines of a commission of inquiry set up by the university council at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) which is currently sitting at Garden Court in Mthatha is still mourning for her son who was killed in April this year.

“If it was up to me even this commission would be fast in getting to the truth. I am not happy at all because I have not yet received closure in this matter,” she said.
The Commission of inquiry into acts of  violence at Walter Sisulu University otherwise known as the (Jafta Commission) is underway at Mthatha Garden Court, opposite the university’s main campus, the Nelson Mandela Drive site in Mthatha.

Sindiswa Mbolekwa says the commission was now even affecting her work as a teacher in Matatiele as she now is forced to abandon classes to attend the commission because she wants to know why her son was killed in order to find some closure.

“As I am hearing evidence from the witnesses who are relaying the story of my son’s killing, it is as if this is new and that I am hearing it for the first time, it brings back all those memories of that day, when I heard the news of his passing.

She said there was a void inside her heart and wants to know why her son, whom she has sent to school in order to learn, was instead shot by the very people who were supposed to protect him.
She said it was evident that their children at the university were being killed for nothing in what is supposed to be a safe environment.

She described the late Sisonke as a loving person who was helpful in the community and was respectful.
On April 15 when Sisonke was killed two other students were also shot and sustained injuries for demanding the removal of Mampane whom they blamed for the appalling conditions of their residences.
